Our focus
We work with schools and communities to create lasting improvement for children in rural Uganda.
African Revival works with rural primary schools and communities in Uganda to address the connected conditions that shape whether children attend, learn, feel safe and complete primary education.
We are developing plans to work with a focused cohort of ten schools for longer. It combines a consistent educational and safeguarding core with improvements based on each school’s assessed needs.

What the evidence suggests
The Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel identifies structured teaching combined with teacher training and learning materials as a cost-effective “good buy”.
A Ugandan evaluation found school facilities grants improved enrolment and attendance, while learning effects were smaller and mixed. Buildings matter, but they are not the whole answer.
In a trial across 42 Ugandan primary schools, the Good School Toolkit reduced the risk of recent physical violence from school staff by 42%.
Why it matters
Rural schools may face several constraints at once: unsafe or overcrowded classrooms, limited books and teaching materials, unsupported teachers, weak safeguarding systems, poor sanitation, seasonal access problems and household poverty.
Fixing one visible problem can help without resolving the others. A classroom can improve access, but learning also depends on teachers, materials, leadership, safety, attendance and support from parents and the wider community.

Our approach
Our emerging whole-school model is being developed with an intended cohort of ten schools, working with teachers, pupils, parents, school leaders, communities and government. Every school will receive a common educational and safeguarding core; other investment will respond to assessed needs.

Practical teacher development, mentoring, school leadership and support for consistent attendance.

Safe learning spaces, water and sanitation, inclusive facilities and maintenance planning.

Structured literacy support, appropriate books and materials, and measurement of learning progress.

A shared improvement plan, local ownership and a realistic pathway for recurrent costs and sustainability.
Evidence and honest learning
Research supports several parts of this approach, but it does not prove that every broad programme is automatically more cost-effective than a targeted intervention. We will establish baselines, track learning, attendance, safety, inclusion and school functionality, and report what is working—and what needs to change.
Technology and other inputs are most effective when schools also strengthen teaching and management.
