Nurseries provide an important pre-school foundation for learning, but in Northern Uganda and South Sudan there is a lack of pre-primary education; only around 4 in 10 young children in Uganda attend pre‑primary education (UNICEF), but this includes many who would be at primary age in the UK. Almost all nursery schools are privately owned and are not regulated. This means the quality of education is poor, and only the richest families can access nursery care. Without nursery education, children that do join primary school, do so without a literary foundation and are not used to socialising with others.

Low-cost ECD nurseries established at rural primary schools where none existed before.
Volunteer nursery teachers trained in lesson planning, classroom management, phonics, and learning through play.
Furniture, mats, classroom resources, books and play materials and provided.
Playgrounds and play equipment provided to support learning through play.
Parents trained and engaged to support early learning at home.
VSLA savings groups established to help parents pay nursery fees (including teacher salaries).
Monitoring and support supervision carried out with local education officials.

Stronger foundations in reading, writing and early literacy.
Better school readiness and socialisation, for smoother transition into P1.
Improved confidence, participation and enjoyment of learning.
Greater parent understanding and support for pre-school education.
Parents better able to save for nursery fees and keep children in school.
Sustainable low-cost nurseries continuing independently after African Revival support ends, and neighbouring schools inspired to establish their own nurseries.
