We build sustainable, inclusive and accessible school infrastructure in partnership with local contractors, in Northern Uganda and South Sudan, at schools where children have been learning outside or in temporary structures. We use eco-friendly ISSB (interlocking stabilised soil block) technology. ISSB blocks are compressed then cured in the sun, rather than fired, eliminating the need for firewood. Less cement is used to make and build with ISSB compared to traditional building methods.

  • Classrooms, furnished with classroom furniture and chalkboards.
  • Water sources – rainwater harvesting tanks and boreholes.
  • Latrines for pupils and staff, including changing rooms for girls.
  • Teacher houses.
  • New trees planted on school sites in Uganda.
  • Improved quality of education – lessons take place indoors, out of the elements, and children do not have to learn sitting on the ground. Classrooms are less crowded.
  • Provision of water reduces the number of hours of learning missed due to travelling to collect water. 
  • Improved sanitation reduces absence due to illness.
  • Girls’ changing rooms improve attendance during menstruation.
  • More trained teachers attracted to schools.
  • Increased enrolment and stronger academic performance.
  • Access to quality primary education is known to drive wider social progress, including better health and hygiene, reduced child mortality, improved nutrition, greater civic participation, and lower levels of rural poverty.
  • Environmentally-friendly building methods reduce pressure on local ecosystems, eliminating the need for charcoal to fire bricks.
