Strong literacy skills have a huge impact on every subject across the curriculum, and yet more than 8 in 10 children in Uganda cannot read and understand a simple story by age 10 (UNESCO), and only around half of Primary 3 (P3) pupils achieve basic literacy and numeracy standards (UNICEF).  We work with schools to improve literacy through provision of books and wheelable libraries and we aim to instil a love of books and reading – for fun as well as improved learning.

  • Story books, bilingual books, phonics readers and wheelable libraries provided.
  • Read Together manuals and workshops delivered for pupils and teachers.
  • Teachers trained in phonics, read-aloud techniques and library management.
  • Pupil reading clubs established and supported.
  • Improved reading confidence, fluency and comprehension.
  • Stronger phonics skills and ability to read unfamiliar words.
  • Greater pupil participation, motivation and enjoyment of reading.
  • More active reading cultures, with pupils borrowing books, reading aloud, retelling stories and joining reading clubs.
